Raised on a fruit farm in Penawawa, Washington, he studied electrical engineering at the University of Idaho, earned an MBA from Harvard, and with his beloved wife Donna, built a family, a business, and a life of adventure. He was a passionate cyclist, lifelong learner, and steady supporter of people and causes he believed in. Jerry was a passionate supporter of Open Hearts Open Minds (OHOM) from the very beginning. When our story began in 2005 with prison performances and dialogue circles led by Johnny Stallings, Jerry was there. When we launched a theater program at Coffee Creek, Jerry was there. When we initiated music and arts at Columbia River, Jerry was there. Thanks to his steadfast support, the Jerry & Donna Smith Family Foundation have been vital in expanding OHOM’s presence inside Oregon’s carceral facilities—bringing life-changing opportunities to thousands. His belief in dignity, creativity, and second chances helped make it all possible. He will be forever appreciated and missed. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Donna; daughters Marsha and Christine; and grandson Jordan. To read Jerry’s full obituary or share condolences, please click HERE. |
